iA Writer’s iPhone App Blows Obsidian’s Out of the Water

Obsidian’s still my favourite on Mac, but something’s not right on mobile

Screenshots of Obsidian app on iPhone, with the text: “My Obsidian iPhone app warm-up routine takes a good (bad?) minute to complete. Yes, I really want to keep all my plugins, and no, I don’t want to write any code to fix things.”

Early this morning, before getting out of bed, I opened iA Writer to check something in my notes.

My digital life is organised inside Obsidian, so why did I bypass the purple crystal this time?

Because of how utterly shocking the Obsidian mobile app is on my trusty iPhone X. Hardware problem? Software? I’ve no idea. What I do know is that the Obsidian start up on my phone is horrifically, unacceptably slow.

Perhaps there’s an easy answer, but until I find it, there is a solution I’m more than happy with.

iA Writer, You’re My (Mobile) Hero

There’s a whole swag of Obsidian features missing from iA Writer, and herein lies its strength. It can —

  • Access my Obsidian vault
  • Load blazingly fast
  • Use bi-directional links
  • Embed one file within another
  • Handle Markdown beautifully

What more do I need on the go? Nothing, usually!

There are no plugins, no fancy gestures, and it seems very stable.
