Obsidian 1.0: Frustration, Fixes, and Fidelity

The first full version of Obsidian is out! Read why my excitement turned to pain.

I was so excited about the first full version of Obsidian, I went and upped my status to that of Supporter while it was downloading. It’s about time I sent some tangible love the developers’ way.

Dear Obsidian developers: No matter what you read here, please know that I’m extremely grateful to you! Your wonderful app has shaped my workflow and enriched my life like no other could have.

Maybe I was carried away by this release coming on the same day my delicious new iPhone 14 Pro arrived, I don’t know. Expectations too high, perhaps? Suffice it to say, I was very disappointed the first time I opened up Obsidian 1.0.

It felt like discovering the maintenance people had reorganised my cupboards and changed the size of the pictures on my walls while I was out. Spoiler: I got over it. Some of my problems were my own fault, and (almost) all were easy to fix.

Skip this next section if you aren’t up for a rant. The next one is more positive, I promise!

What I initially hated (the rant)

  • Tabs. They’re a distraction. I don’t want a new tab each time I open a file. Worst…
